The Role of Platelet-rich Plasma in Charcot Foot Reconstruction

Growing interest exists regarding the surgical correction of diabetes-associated Charcot foot arthropathy. These patients are complicated by morbid obesity, multiple medical comorbidities, severe osteoporosis, and impaired wound healing. Knowledge of the high complication rates for wound failure, wound infection, or mechanical failure has stimulated interest in the use of statically applied circular external fixation. This presentation deals with the potential role of pooled platelet-derived growth factors (platelet-rich concentrate) and pluripotential stem cells (bone marrow aspirate), combined with circular external fixation in the treatment of this complex patient population.
