Evaluation of muscular movements at the lower limb joints by an on-line processing of kinematic data and ground reaction.

Abstract In order to analyse the muscular moments at the lower limb joints during human locomotion, a new experimental technique is presented. By using specially made instrumentation, the images of the vector representing the ground reaction during its evolution are superimposed on-line to the images showing the positions of the hip, knee and ankle joint axes. The sequence of superimposed images provides a direct representation of the muscular moments during the stance-phase. The time course values are obtained by multiplying the vector amplitude by its distance from the joints in each image. The approximation of the computed values is evaluated by comparing the curves so obtained and those provided by a complete mathematical analysis of locomotion based on digital processing of the experimental data.
