Agents applied in health care

Presentation Multi-agent systems are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence at the moment. In the last five years there has been a growing interest in the application of agent-based systems in health care, and some specialised meetings are beginning to appear. This workshop is precisely devoted to the application of agents and multi-agent systems in all areas of health care. The organising committee has selected eight papers, that cover issues related to the use of agents and multi-agent systems in three important areas: the improvement of health care in senior citizens, the diagnostic process, and the access to medical information. In the first area there are three papers. Mouratidis presents an agent-based system called eSAP (electronic Single Assessment Process), that helps in the assessment of the health and social care needs of senior citizens. Beer reports the design and implementation of a multi-agent system called INCA (INtelligent Community Alarm), which helps to coordinate the activities of the different agencies and individuals involved in the provision of health care to old citizens of a given community. Annicchiarico describes in a position paper some points of future research in this area, stressing the importance of autonomous agents and wireless devices in the design and construction of intelligent assistive devices. There are two contributions to the field of diagnostics in the workshop. Ciampolini explains how agents endowed with capabilities for logical abductive reasoning may be used for distributed diagnosis of infections within a hospital. Mabry defines a set of agents called IM-agents (Intelligent Monitoring agents), that may be applied to the tasks of patient monitoring and diagnostics. Agents may also be used to ease the access to medical information. Kostkova presents a project being developed in the UK called National electronic Library for Communicable Disease (NeLCD), in which agents assist humans in the tasks of searching and publishing information, document reviewing and data exchange. Moreno describes a multi-agent system developed within the AgentCities European project, in which a hierarchy of agents help the user to access medical data (such as information about medical centres and doctors, appointments with doctors, or patient medical records). Finally, Vázquez-Salceda describes the CARREL multi-agent system, in which agents help to coordinate the different steps involved in the transplantation of tissues and organs. The workshop also features an invited speech by John Fox, from Cancer Research UK. He is a very well known researcher in …
