The Pharitas is one of the earliest extant Greek treatises with numbered chapter headings in the text itself. These headings are not only genuine but also very functional. Numbering of items can be paralleled from other technical literature, so the chapter numbers are likely to be authentic. The reader may encounter important examples of a short 'on (the) X formula' in the chapter of Aristotle's Topics discussed in Section 14, and in the description of the Stoic physikos logos discussed in Section 8.
