Statistical process control charts are widely used in manufacturing industry; they are used for monitoring process performance; they are used for problem solving; they are used for checking the stability of processes — this latter activity being closely associated with the assessment of process capability. All three uses are illustrated in Caulcutt (1995), Oakland and Followell (1990) and Grant and Leavenworth (1988), for example.
