This paper is meant as an introduction in vehicle dynamics and its control. Starting from an investigation of the controlling process driving, the car is introduced as a dynamic system. Then the elementary actions of longitudinal, lateral and vertical car movements are illustrated by means of simplified models. From that the basic requirements on controlling systems, which are to support the driver by preventing wheel locking while braking, by assuring stability while cornering and by increasing the driving comfort through automatically adjusting the damping force, can be derived
