Mobility management: A proactive QoS-Aware proxy MIP with improved handover latency for end-to-end QoS provisioning in a proxy MIP domain

To reduce the cost and complexity of mobile subscriber devices, it is desirable that mobility be handled by network systems only. PMIPv6 relies on MIPv6 signaling and the reuse of the home agent functionality through a proxy mobility management agent in the network to transparently provide mobility services to mobile subscriber devices. Handover latency resulting from standard MIPv6 procedures remains unacceptable to real time traffic and its reduction can also be beneficial to non real-time throughput-sensitive applications as well. In this paper, therefore, we present a proactive QoS-Aware PMIPv6 that relies on a rich set of informational resources including on-the-go QoS requirements and service level agreements of mobile subscriber devices to make efficient proactive handover decisions. This scheme significantly reduces handover delays; and helps to ensure that mobile subscribers can continue their QoS sensitive and/or SLA-based sessions as they roam within a PMIP domain.
