Development of a target tracking algorithm for imaging infrared seekers

A target tracking algorithm for imaging infrared seekers is proposed. The algorithm is based on image preprocessing, horizon detection, segmentation based candidate targets/background discrimination, and target decision by using features of candidate targets. The locations of targets are estimated with Kalman filter using constant velocity target model. Scenario based performance of the tracking algorithm, working successfully on real images, is investigated by testing with synthetic images generated for different scenarios. The effectiveness of the algorithm is also evaluated against electronic attack such as flare dispense. The results obtained show the possibility of developing effective target detection and tracking algorithms using synthetic images.
