From chapter 2 it has become clear that power dissipation plays an important role when considering operational costs, environment, local chip temperatures and battery lifetime. The power dissipation of a computational process depends on the physical process on which it is based. Two types of physical processes can be distinguished, see figure 3.1:
reversible processes;
irreversible processes.
