Radionuclide Measurement Using HPGe Gamma Spectrometry

In this chapter we have outlined the basic methodology, equipment, and software necessary to determine activities of 137Cs and other gamma-emitting radionuclides using HPGe gamma-spectrometry methods. The analysis of radioactivity in samples at environmental levels is a complex task. The equipment can be expensive, and the level of skills required to achieve accurate analyses with good precision is very high. There is ongoing need for a comprehensive quality-assurance programmes as well as participation in inter-laboratory comparisons. As mentioned in the introduction, this chapter is not meant to be exhaustive, nor to be used as an operator’s manual. The practitioner is advised to become familiar with the texts and articles listed below.
