Enhancing the Network Lifetime Using on Demand Tree Based Routing Protocol for MANET

The On demand or reactive routing protocols are efficient in providing scalable information delivery. These protocols perform the route discovery to find the path only when the source node needs it. The route is discovered by simply flooding the route request packets throughout the entire network. This way of blindly flooding the RREQ packets increases the network overhead. In order to improve the network performance by reducing the overhead, On demand Tree based Routing Protocol (OTRP) is used. This protocol is designed with an effective algorithm for discovering the path known as Tree-based Optimised Flooding (TOF). This mechanism works by allowing only certain nodes in the network to flood the RREQ packets, termed as branch nodes. OTRP enhances the network functionality but if the branch nodes with minimum residual energy process the RREQ, they may not be able to complete even the route discovery which will degrade the network performance. To improve the lifetime of the nodes as well as the overall network performance, Energy Aware On demand Tree Routing Protocol (EAOTRP) considers the residual energy of the branch nodes as a metric for making RREQ processing decision. This protocol is evaluated using the parameters packet delivery ratio and average power consumption.
