Anastasius of Sinai and the Beginnings of Islam

Abstract:The collection of Edifying Tales made by Anastasius of Sinai is an extremely informative yet almost entirely overlooked source for understanding the beginnings of Islam. Anastasius made this collection, it would seem, sometime before 690 CE at the latest, and its stories have much to tell about day-to-day relations between Christians and Muslims during the first half-century after the Muslim conquests. Likewise, their reports raise some fundamental questions about the nature of Islam during its earliest history.
