AN IMPROVED APPROACH IN FLOODING WITH PACKET REACHABILITY IN FSR (FISHEYE STATE ROUTING) PROTOCOL USING MANET

Packet Reach ability and Broadcasting in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) is a fundamental data dissemination mechanism with a number of important applications, e.g., route discovery, address resolution. However broadcasting induces what is known as the ‘‘broadcast storm problem’’ w hich causes severe degradation in network performan ce due to excessive redundant re- transmission , collision, and contention. Broadcasting in MAN ETs has traditionally based on flooding, which simply swamps the network with large number of rebroadcast messages in order to reach all netw ork nodes. Although probabilistic flooding has been one of the earliest suggested schemes to broadcast ing, there has not been so far any attempt to an alyze its performance behavior in a MANET environment. In an effort to fill this gap, this paper investiga tes using extensive NS-2 simulations the effects o f a number of important system parameters in a typical MAN ET, including node speed, pause time, and nod e density on the performance of probabilistic fl ooding. The results reveal that most of thes e parameters have a critical impact on the rea ch ability and the number of saved rebroadcas t messages achieved by probabilistic flooding.
