The aim of this study is to examine whether Korean learners' perception of English liquids shows variable patterns according to different syllable positions and neighboring vowel environments. Thirty syllables were contrasted by liquids /l/ and /r/ in two positions: syllable-initial position and final position. Nine vowels were presented in /l/ or /r/ onset environments, and six vowels were presented in /l/ or /r/ coda environments. After listening to the stimulus, the subjects were asked to click on one of two /l/, /r/ icons on the computer screen. The study results are that high school students' perception ability of English /l/ and /r/ differed from elementary school students' significantly, and that the subjects' identification abilities were a function of neighboring vowel environments.
