A case of small cell carcinoma of the ampulla of vater

Small cell carcinoma of the biliary tract is rare condition. Especially, in the ampulla of Vater, small cell carcinomas is revealed extremely rare. Clinical manifestations of primary small cell carcinoma of the biliary tract is similar to that of usual cholangiocarcinoma of the bile duct. But prognosis of small cell carcinoma is very poor compared with that of usual bile duct carcinoma. In most cases, the median survival is expected to be about 5-10 months. Recently we experienced a 62 year old female patient who was admitted to our institute for obstructive jaundice. During ERCP, nodular, ulcerative lesion at the ampulla of Vater was observed. Small cell carcinoma was proved by biopsy. A pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed, but she died of intraabdominal abscess 2 months later.(Korean J Med 70:S132-S136, 2006)
