This paper will present an analytic method for estimating capacity for repeated traffic patterns on a railway section. The vision is to use the method as a basis for developing tools for infrastructure analysis that support the process of designing an infrastructure that meets the traffic needs. Traffic patterns can be modeled as a discrete event system where the events considered are associated with trains waiting for other trains.
