Simplified Analytical Representation of Lightning Strike Waveshapes

For the evaluation of the back flashover risk of a transmission line using simulations, scalable mathematical direct strike representations, associated lightning parameters, and lightning data from the line route are necessary. In this paper, a summary of direct-strike lightning parameters for first negative and subsequent strikes as well as positive strikes is given. For ease of software implementation, simplified analytical formula to generate waveforms for first and subsequent negative as well as positive strikes are deduced, which feature the advantage of strike current as the sole input parameter then certain adjustment parameters are set. A comparison of the analytical solution to the exact numerical solution is conducted, which shows an overall good agreement to the numerical solutions.
