Since 1960, the USSR has constructed mostly supercritical fossil-fired power plants. This study discusses these supercritical power plants and the improvements made in equipment design and operating procedures to reduce heat rates. It includes technical information about typical 300, 500, 800 and 1200 MW power plants operating at 3414 psig/1049/1049F. It also addresses advanced designs operating at 4267 psig/1200/1200F. Cogeneration and district heating, widely used in the USSR, are discussed. The need and methods for life extension and improved efficiency in the aging power plants of the USSR are presented. Information is supplied about major institutions responsible for design, development, testing, manufacturing and operation of power plants in the USSR.
