A wideband wide‐angle ultrathin low profile metamaterial microwave absorber

A simple design of wideband wide-angle ultrathin low profile metamaterial microwave absorber has been presented. The unit cell of proposed design is composed of an inclined metallic hexagonal patch printed on a grounded dielectric substrate. The simulation result shows 10-dB absorption bandwidth of 5.02 GHz from 8.81 to 13.83 GHz and the FWHM bandwidth is 7.56 GHz from 8.17 to 15.73 GHz under normal incidence. The performance of the absorber has been investigated under different oblique angles and polarization angles of the incident wave. The absorption mechanism of the proposed absorber is analyzed through optimization of its geometrical dimensions, surface current, and electromagnetic field distributions. The proposed absorber is fabricated and then experimentally verified for different oblique angles and polarization angles of the incident wave. The designed absorber is low profile (unit cell size 0.21 λ0 at the center frequency), ultrathin (only λ0/17 thick) and provide more than 70% absorptivity for a bandwidth of 4.15 GHz for incidence angle up to 60°. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
