New topology of electronic smoothing inductor used in three phase electric drives

This paper outlines an improved topology for the Electronic Smoothing Inductor (ESI), used for the reduction of overall size of an diode bridge based three phase electric drive. By adding a smaller standard inductor inside the DC Link circuit and controlling the DC Link current a new topology is created. The newly topology referred to as Active Filter Electronic Smoothing Inductor (AFESI) combines both techniques of Active Harmonic Filter and Electronic Smoothing Inductor inside of the DC-link circuit to control the DC-link current. This allows shaping the diode bridge input currents into square shape waveforms thus reaching an overall Total Harmonic Distortion of less than 31%. There are few other advantages of the newly proposed topology compared to other reported ESI found in literature: it can be implemented for larger rated output power than classical ESI due to lower passive components, and it eliminates parasitic oscillations present in another derived Modified Electronic Smoothing Inductors (MESI). Modeling and simulations are used in this article to confirm the above findings.
