Topology, Shape and Standard Sizing Optimization of Trusses Using MINLP Optimization Approach

The paper presents the simultaneous topology, shape and discrete/standard sizing optimization of steel trusses using Mixed-Integer Non-linear Programming (MINLP) approach. The discrete/continuous non-convex and non-linear optimization problems are solved by the Modified OA/ER algorithm. Two types of objective functions are introduced for the optimization, namely a volume/mass objective function and an economic objective function. The design constraints are defined in accordance to Eurocode 3. A numerical example is presented at the end of the paper in order to show the suitability of the proposed approach and to emphasize the importance of selecting a proper objective function.
