Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Properties of a Chloro-bridged Dinuclear Copper(II) Complex, [Cu2(Hsae)2Cl2](H2O)0.5

The synthesis, spectral properties and the X-ray crystal structure of [Cu2(Hsae)2Cl2](H2O)0.5 (H2sae=salicylidene-2-ethanolamine), a new chloro-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complex, are described. The complex (C18H21N2O4.5Cl2Cu2, triclinic, P-1, a=12.352(8) Å, b=12.393(8) Å, c=15.273(9) Å, α=78.171(12)°, β=86.666(14)°, γ=66.238(11)°, Z=4) is composed of a dinuclear unit and the two copper(II) ions are doubly bridged by the chloride anions. Each copper(II) ion adopts distorted square pyramidal structure in which the two oxygens and one nitrogen atom of the Schiff base ligands and one bridging chloride anion forms the basal plane, and the remaining axial position is occupied by another bridging chloride anion, which is equatorial to the other copper(II).
