Data Partitioning and Unbalanced Error Protection for H.263 Video Transmission over Wireless Channels

Recently, the growing demand and potential market for new services and applications has spurred the research on video transmission and multimedia services over wireless networks. In terms of channel characteristics, the radio channels in wireless networks are error prone and their bandwidth is limited due to the availability of accessible frequency spectrum. The video bit stream, after efficient source coding, is very vulnerable to channel errors, it therefore presents a challenging design problem to obtain acceptable quality video over lossy radio channels. Classified (layered) source coding and unbalanced (unequal) error protection provide a possible mechanism to enable the reliable transmission of compressed video bit streams over wireless links.
