Etiology and pathogenesis of ulcerative enteritis ("quail disease"). Characterization of the causative anaerobe.

SUMMARY Seventeen strains of an anaerobic bacterium isolated from cases of ulcerative enteritis in chickens, pheasants, and quail were studied by either conventional anaerobic techniques or pre-reduced culture media. According to their biochemical characteristics and fermentation products it does not appear that these bacteria belong to any of the species of pathogenic clostridia previously described. They appear to belong to a new species of Clostridium tentatively named Clostridium colinum.
