Microflap vocal fold cover excisional biopsy for atypia and microinvasive glottic cancer

Microflap dissection and resection are an effective strategy for the management of premalignant and microinvasive neoplastic glottic epithelium. It provides for an en bloc excisional biopsy while affording precise diagnostic information by means of serial section histopathologic analysis of the specimen. The medial lamina propria is not violated, resulting in less scarring of the vocal fold cover to the vocal ligament. The approach may be repeated and preserves other cancer treatment options for more advanced disease. Finally, it is cost-effective and may be performed as outpatient surgery.
