Automated generalisation is a process that generates from an initial dataset a second one depending on a set of specifications. These specifications are usually set up in order to reduce the amount of information either to be able to display it (as a map), or to be able to process it using computationally expensive analysis tools. Depending on the purpose, the specifications can be seen as different types of constraints.
