Current Issues and Future Developments

For many, entity extraction is the primary goal of line drawing interpretation; the majority of the published literature in the field is concerned with processes contributing to or preceding the recognition of drawing entities. However, like vectorisation and primitive extraction, entity recognition may be seen as a step towards an even higher-level interpretation. The representation produced at this higher level provides a global view in which locally recognised entities are combined to provide a description of the entire drawing. Our own initial steps in this direction were described in Chapter 11.
