Mineral density quantification from electron microscopy images

The automated strength of bones are commonly depends on diverse organic elements to mineral ratio. On a macroscopic scale the determination of bone mineral content is straightforward. Also they can yield new insights into remodeling activities, mechanical strength, and integrity on microscopic level, which are profoundly much challenging to measure. Microscopic mineral content variations in bone materials can be measured with various diverse techniques such as EDAX, Raman or FT-IR microscopy. We report here the variations in mineral content in microscopic images of normal bone and fractured bone representing a broad range of mineralization. Different imaging techniques were used to analyze the electron microscopic images and the applicability of ImageJ and MATLAB is demonstrated.
