DEMAND FOR A PRE-TRIP ATIS CONDITIONED UPON COMMUNICATIONS MEDIA: A STATED-CHOICE ANALYSIS

Highway incidents are a continuing source of commuter discomfort and add to the cost of highway operations. Advanced traveler information systems (ATIS) are being designed to collect real-time information and inform travelers of traffic conditions through such media as the telephone, fax, or cable TV. The work reported in this study examines demand for a corridor-specific pre-trip ATIS system. The design of marketable ATIS must be sensitive to a commuter's willingness to disrupt pre-trip routines as well as actual need for specific types of information. This study develops and tests a set of market analysis instruments. The research was carried out in the Route 22 corridor of central New Jersey.
