THE 1964 CALIFORNIA DRIVER RECORD STUDY, PART 8 - THE PREDICTION OF ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT USING CONCURRENT DRIVER RECORD DATA

ASPECTS OF POST-LICENSING DRIVER CONTROL IN CALIFORNIA WERE STUDIED TO RELATE EMPIRICAL DATA TO OPERATIONAL POLICY. THE APPROACH WAS EMPIRICAL IN THAT IT WAS BASED ON THE MEASURED ASSOCIATION BETWEEN EACH VIOLATION CATEGORY AND ACCIDENTS. THE PROCEDURE OF UTILIZING DRIVING RECORD COUNTS OR POINTS IN SELECTING DRIVERS FOR REHABILITATIVE OR RESTRICTIVE ACTION WAS STUDIED. BASED ON THE FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY, HIGHLY COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND FORMULAE FOR ASSIGNING POINT DIFFERENTIALS BY TYPE OF VIOLATION DO NOT SEEM JUSTIFIED AS SELECTION DEVICES FOR ADMINISTRATIVE USE IN MOTOR VEHICLE AGENCIES.
