SHRP-LTPP SPECIFIC PAVEMENT STUDIES: FIVE-YEAR REPORT

Although pavements have been built and maintained in North America for more than 100 years, and although road tests and laboratory analyses have improved the design and performance of pavements, much remains to be learned. The General Pavement Studies (GPS) portion of the Strategic Highway Research Program's Long-Term Pavement Performance (SHRP-LTPP) project will provide much of the needed information. GPS will not, however, provide all the comparisons and parameters needed to study the effects of certain important factors on pavement performance. The Specific Pavement Studies (SPS) portion examines specially constructed pavements, which will help develop better understanding of the effects on performance of a few targeted factors not widely covered in GPS. SPS also explores options for construction of new pavements, the application of maintenance treatments to existing pavements, and the rehabilitation of distressed pavements. This report summarizes the status of SPS as of June 30, 1992.
