Surface Plasmon and Polariton Dispersion at Rough Boundaries

The influence of surface roughness on electromagnetic surface modes is investigated theoretically. A frequency or wave vector shift is found and a damping of the modes depending on the autocorrelation of the surface roughness. This could be described by an explicit analytic expression. There is good agreement with experimental results on sinus-odially modulated silver surfaces. Der Einflus von Oberflachenrauhigkeit auf elektromagnetische Oberflachenanregungen wird theoretisch untersucht. Eine von der Autokorrelation der Oberflachenrauhigkeit ab-hangige Wellenvektor- oder Frequenzverschiebung sowie eine Dampfung der Anregungen wird gefunden. Diese Effekte lassen sich durch cinen expliziten analytischen Ausdruck beschreiben. Es besteht gute Ubereinstimmung mit experimentellen Ergebnissen an sinus-formig modulierten Silberoberflachen.
