THE BEHAVIOUR OF STAINLESS STEEL LIPPED CHANNEL AXIALLY LOADED COMPRESSION MEMBERS. IN: STRUCTURAL STABILITY RESEARCH COUNCIL. 1990 ANNUAL TECHNICAL SESSION, STABILITY OF BRIDGES, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, APRIL 10-11, 1990

The purpose of this investigation was to obtain the necessary information on the flexural and torsional flexural buckling strength of stainless steel axially loaded compression members. The study was carried out on 83x52x16,5x2, 5 lipped channels with lengths that varied between 200 mm and 2000 mm. The ratio of the width to the breadth of the lipped channel was 0,63 which turned out to be an indicator of the failure mode of the section. Because singly symmetric axially loaded compression members are subject to torsional flexural buckling it was expected from previous work that these columns would also fail in that mode. Due to the selected ratio of width to breadth it was found that all these columns failed in weak axis flexural buckling. It is the opinion of the authors that the width to breadth ratio is a factor in determining the type failure mode for singly symmetric lipped channels.
