Demand side integration — A potential analysis for the German power system

One of the most important challenges today's transmission systems operators is the full integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. Already the current power system with the present amount of renewable generation sometimes reaches the limit of balancing stability as well as capacity of the power network. Due to changing weather conditions the load gradients today and those expected in the future require additional options to ensure high security of supply. Demand side integration (DSI) provides a high potential for power system balancing. In the case of high renewable generation the load can be shifted to these times. In this contribution the authors will show the methodology to estimate the DSI potential in the case of Germany and provide information about the present potential of DSI.
