Growth rate of polypeptide chains as a function of the cell growth rate in a mutant of Escherichia coli 15.

Abstract The average growth rate of polypeptide chains in cells growing at various rates has been calculated. These calculations are based on measurements of the number of active ribosomes and of the amounts of protein in different media. Cultures having a reciprocal doubling time (μ) greater than one doubling per hour exhibit a chain growth rate of 20 to 21 amino acids per second independent of μ. However, as μ decreases to less than one doubling per hour the average chain growth rate decreases significantly.
