Statistical and physical-statistical modeling of the land mobile satellite, LMS, channel at Ku- and Ka-band

In this paper, results from two studies, one [1] for ESA, the European Space Agency, awarded to a contortion led by Joanneum Research (A), and the other [2] for CNES, the French National Space Studies Center, awarded to ONERA (F), are presented. These studies had the task of evaluating the characteristics of both the narrowband and wideband channels at Ku- and Ka-Band so that the feasibility of setting up mobile services at these bands could be established. Here already the troposphere plays an important role, however, this paper is limited to reporting on the effects of the near surroundings of the user terminal, i.e., shadowing and multipath. The authors of both studies are involved and collaborate in the frame for COST 0802 [3].
