EFFECTS OF HALOTHANE, CYCLOPROPANE AND NITROUS OXIDE ON ISOLATED HUMAN UTERINE MUSCLE

THE effects of anaesthetic drugs on human uterine muscle have been studied by many investigators using isolated myometrial preparations. The influence of environmental solutions (Corey el ul., 1959, 1961), temperature (Ahlgren and Kullander, 1959), and various anaesthetic agents (McGaughey et al., 1962; Talbert et ul., 1958) have been reported. All anaesthetics studied have produced some depression of uterine muscle activity. But an evaluation and comparison of drug effects from most previous reports is difficult because of variations in experimental design; failure to define anaesthetic dosage; and failure to achieve and maintain steady state conditions. We have developed a quantitative method for evaluating in vitro the effects of anaesthetic drugs on isolated muscle. Using this technique the responses were measured of isolated human non-gravid myometrial strips to concentrations of halothane, cyclopropane and nitrous oxide that are used clinically.
