Atitudes face à Matemática e rendimento escolar no Sistema Educativo Espanhol

The interest of studying the relation between learning mathematics and students attitudes towards this school subject has been growing along with the increasing failure of students in this school area. Success in Maths is a great challenge to almost every educational systems not only because maths is said to be one of the most important school subjects in the curriculum but also because of the structuring contribution of this subject in the development of cognitive knowledge and the instrumental role of most Maths knowledge in adult life. This study, part of a multicultural research involving the educational systems in three different countries (Brazil, Spain and Portugal), gives evidence to the differences in attitudes towards Maths according to school year in the Spanish educational context. Data, corroborated by literature in the area, suggest that as the students proceed compulsory education their attitude towards Maths becomes more and more negative along the years.
