CUBICORT: simulation of the visual-cortical system for very low bit rate compression

We have developed new neural paradigms and simulators based on cortical models of the visual cortex in the brain. These simulators are currently developed for ultrahigh image compression in the MPEG4 research environment. The first significant results have just been achieved in very low bit rate coding (at 30 Kbits/s and less), with more acceptable aspects that fit with visual system requirement. Moreover neural tools seem to be generic and well adapted to the various input styles of TV sequences, thanks to their learning capabilities and architecture dedicated to all kinds of 2D and 3D analysis-synthesis processing.
