Community Leaders

Abstract This paper presents the outcomes of ten years of community psychology practice in three low-income communities in the city of Caracas, and the way community leaders deal with the organization and relate to the persons that integrate their communities, as observed both by the author and some of her students, and colleagues. The general characteristics of community leadership and its participatory condition are discussed. Field notes, the leaders' interviews and narratives, and participant observation provided the data to be analyzed. Four modes of leadership are analyzed and illustrated with examples: The transformational leader; the narcissistic-seductive leaders in their positive and their negative expressions, and the altruistic leader. These categories are described, pointing out their assets and limitations. Finally, some tips on the relation between external agents working in the community and the community leaders are given.
