Abstract Reward and recognition systems are vital components for the attainment of a productive work environment within an R & D setting. Achievement recognition must be defined in terms of the values of its end-users; i.e., the people who work in the unit. The basis for such a system is the approach and style of the unit's management. It is crucial that the R & D manager clearly understand how to develop, implement, and revise the system in order to be able to achieve and maintain an effective organization.
