Scram jet component optimization using CFD and design of experiments

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in conjunction with a statistical framework known as Design of Experiments (DOE) was applied to a notional scramjet. The scramjet studied is a large aspect ratio with no lateral compression. Therefore, twodimensional CFD is appropriate for the inlet, and threedimensional CFD representing only a segment of the full width is used for the combustor. The design variables are all geometric quantities. For the inlet, the results of the DOE analysis are used to focus the search for optimal performance on a smaller portion of the design space. For the combustor, a sparse DOE matrix is used to minimize computational cost and retain a quadratic response surface approximation.
