Computer-Aided Modelling Methods and Tools

Modelling is needed in some form in almost all disciplines. Models of mathematical form are needed to generate information (knowledge) in the form of data through which various types of problems (modelling context) can be solved for the system under consideration. Mathematical models for a process may be derived by applying the principle of conservation of mass, energy and/or momentum on a defined system volume (representing the process) and its connections to the surroundings. This chapter provides an overview of the structure of mathematical models. A model representation helps to describe the system being modelled, to conceptualize the modelling process, and to identify the model contents. Computer-aided modelling tools can guide and assist the model developer and significantly reduce the time and resources used in model development. Through a computer-aided framework that allows the use of various modelling methods and tools, it is possible to perform the modelling tasks in a systematic and efficient manner. A number of very useful modelling methods are available from different sources—commercial as well as from academia. Two of these are highlighted to illustrate some of the modelling concepts.
