Design and implementation of a body monitoring baseband system for human body communication

Wireless body area network (WBAN) brings great convenience in the field of medical monitoring. This paper presents a new design and implementation of baseband system for human body monitoring. The system consists of a configurable node digital baseband subsystem and a hub digital baseband subsystem. In order to enable the system more efficient and flexible, We propose an optimized communication protocol on the basis of IEEE802.15.6 and design a new network management unit (NMU) for the hub which is similar with the lookup table. The baseband system is verified on the FPGA prototype platform with 2-Mb/s system data rate. With the SMIC 0.13μm technology, the area and power of node digital basband are 183985μm2 and 1.6634 mW, and the cost of hub are 160703μm2 and 1.6918 mW.
