Performance Evaluation of OWC Using Different Modulation Techniques

Abstract In this paper, performance of an optical wireless communication (OWC) channel has been investigated using different modulation techniques such as phase shift keying (PSK), differential PSK (DPSK) and optical quadrature PSK (OQPSK). This investigation has been compared at a bit rate of 20 Gbps. The results are evaluated in terms of quality (Q) factor and bit error rate (BER) using different modulation techniques. It is observed that by using PSK modulation technique, the signal can travel up to 70 km transmission distance with acceptable BER of 3.48×10−12 and Q factor of 6.93. It is also observed that by using DPSK and OQPSK, system covers transmission distance of 80 and 90 km with acceptable values of Q factor of 6.59, 6.02 and BER of 2.34×10−11, 1.46×10–10, respectively.
