IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION

The fundamentals and operation of an impressed current cathodic protection system have been reviewed. The method is interpreted as electrolysis. The electrode processes of cathodic protection, and their catalytic aspects have been discussed. The conditions under which corrosion damage of a steel structure can be expected, even at -0,85 V (versus Cu/CuS04 reference electrode) cathodic polarization, are discussed. It has been stated that, in addition to electric measurements, the study of electrocatalytic and corrosion processes and soil analysis are needed for planning and operating a cathodic protection system.
