Signal processing considerations in power management applications

Abstract As with many other applications, power management systems are improving due to the use of ASICs containing DSP circuits. The ICs used in these applications contain sufficient computing power to determine high current conditions and measure power as well as perform other functions of interest. The programmability and flexibility of these ICs have caused them to be widely used since the same IC can serve an entire product line of power management products. At the heart of these devices are signal processing methods which allow them to be technically and economically feasible. From the Δ−Σ A/D converters, which allow devices to be fabricated in an inexpensive CMOS process, to the complex digital signal processing used in power metering, signal processing plays a significant role in realizing these devices.
