Prototyping Smart Objects for Ubiquitous Computing

Technology enabling us to augment physical objects with electronics and thereby making them ’smart’ is readily available. What could keep us from building smart objects? This paper keeps in perspective current development and technologies with a focus on ubiquitous computing appliances. The primary contribution of this work is the identification of issues related to prototyping hardand software as well as to finally building these devices. Guidelines for development are presented and an outlook for future research is given.
