Strategies and assessments online: Novices' experience

As end users begin to do their own searches, more insight into their searching behavior is needed. Using the transcripts and keystrocke record collected during three searches, we identify and describe the strategies, assessments, and affective behaviors shown. The affective behaviors exhibited by the searchers demonstrate the involvement of other than cognitive activities in this intellectual pursuit. Particularly is the single mindedness of the search strategies. Also described are the searchers' online assessments of the usefulness of retrieved records, including assessment strategies that were developed.
