Standardization activities on multimedia coding in ISO

Abstract This paper first explains the organization of ISO and its background. Then it describes the standardization activities on picture and audio information coding (i.e. multimedia information coding) that take place in ISO/JTC1/SC2: WG8. An overview of recent WG8 activities is given, including discussions on the identification mechanism for different coding methods, the photographic compression coding algorithm and also starting activities on coding of bi-level images, moving picture images and audio, together with the cooperative relations with CCITT.
